Steve Carell wouldn’t call himself an over-bearing dad, but he’ll do his best to protect his little girl from heartbreak.
“You don’t want to see your kids get hurt. That’s the main thing,” Carell, 44, told reporters at the Despicable Me 2 press day held in Los Angeles on June 14.
“You know they’re going to have their hearts broken at some point, and you can’t ultimately protect them against having that happen.”
But until that day comes, the actor is enjoying time with both of his kids – Elisabeth Anne, 12, and John, 9 – for as long as he can.
“I know there’s another period of time that’s going to be a very, very different and difficult growth period for everybody, my wife and I as well,” he adds.
As for a recent difficult moment for the father of two, Carell admits he felt bad about keeping his appearance on The Office series finale under wraps.
“I lied for months,” he shares. “We just figured it would be a fun surprise if people weren’t expecting it. I didn’t want it about [my character] Michael coming back … [but] more of a tip of the hat to the show.”
Carell wasn’t alone though! His Office costar John Krasinski told PEOPLE earlier this month he was a culprit of lying too – and actually found the experience thrilling.
