Warner Bros. has stunned the moviegoing public by casting Ben Affleck as the next Batman.
The Academy Award winning actor and director will don the cowl and replace Christian Bale, who said previously he was done playing the DC Comics legend after starring in three films.
Affleck’s first appearance as Bruce Wayne as his crime fighting alter ego will be in 2015, when he will appear alongside Henry Cavill in the Man of Steel sequel, a Batman-Superman feature. Zack Snyder is set to direct.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character,” Warner Bros. president of creative development Greg Silverman said in a statement that announced the casting news.
Snyder said, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
It was previously believed a lesser-known actor would take over of Christian Bale. A rumored list included Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, Max Martini, and Matthew Goode.
This isn’t the first time Affleck tried on some superhero tights. He played Daredevil to mixed reviews and Superman portrayer George Reeves in Hollywoodland.
What do you think of Ben Affleck as Batman?
Norman Winter, a publicist who represented music icons including Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan, has died.
Winter passed away on Thursday (22Aug13) in Las Vegas due to complications from Lewy Body disease. His family declined to reveal his age, but he was believed to have been in his 80s.
He worked closely with the King of Pop to promote his legendary Thriller album, and also helped Jackson acquire some of the The Beatles’ song catalogue and negotiate his endorsements with Pepsi.
Throughout his career, Winter also worked with a whole host of music greats such as Neil Diamond, Dr. Dre, Garth Brooks, Paul Anka, Queen, Barry White, AC/DC, Marvin Gaye, Usher, Billy Joel, and Jackson’s sister Janet.
Jackson’s longtime attorney John Branca says, “We are so sad to hear of the passing of our dear friend Norman Winter. Norman was a unique, one of a kind character who was dearly beloved. He was of great help and service to Michael and our team during the Thriller period.”
Winter is survived by his wife Joy, daughters Jennifer and Elizabeth and brother Alfred, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Behold: The girls in blue.
When walking the carpet – and fawning over each other – at the premiere of Smurfs 2 over the weekend, Katy Perry and Britney Spears knew there was only one hue to wear: blue.
Perry paid tribute to the beloved Smurfette, the character she again voices in the animated sequel, with a cobalt blue Tadashi Shoji dress, while Spears – whose “Ooh La La” is featured on the film’s soundtrack – wore a signature bandage dress in cyan and black.
The frocks call for a style showdown: Which lady worked blue better? Make your opinion known in the poll below.
Showing a rare sign of self-awareness, Johnny Depp on Monday hinted to BBC he’s thinking about retiring from acting relatively soon.
“When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, and you realize that you’ve said written words more than you’ve actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as an insane option for a human being,” Depp said while promoting his latest movie, The Lone Ranger.
Depp, who spoke of similar things to Rolling Stone in June, continued:
Are there quieter things I wouldn’t mind doing? Yeah, I wouldn’t mind that. I wouldn’t say that I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away.
Sure; but with at least three movies in the pipeline – the Rob Marshall musical Into the Woods (fine) and sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean (why?) and Alice in Wonderland (seriously, why?) – “probably not too far away” should be taken lightly.
So should that thing I just said about self-awareness, come to think of it.
He may be a “Gentleman,” but the face behind “Gangnam Style” is also quite the drinker.
Psy – the current record holder for most-watched YouTube video – recently revealed a startling relationship with alcohol.
“If I’m happy, I’m drinking, if I’m sad, I’m drinking. If it’s raining, I’m drinking, if it’s sunny, I’m drinking,” he told United Kingdom’s Sunday Times magazine.
When asked when he stopped, the Korean popstar responded: “When I’m hungover”, before admitting it has happened “a lot” in the past.
In the interview, the 35-year-old went on to call Korean vodka is his “best friend” and his “vice partner,” though he also admitted that he’ll drink “whisky, vodka, tequila, whatever.”
Psy first broke out of the Stateside scene with “Gangnam Style” in July 2012. The music video for the catchy pop tune has since received over 1.7 billion views.
For all of us anxiously awaiting Orange is the New Black‘s second season (2014 isn’t too far off right?) there’s some exciting news. Just like Taryn Manning before her, Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, has been promoted to series regular. When it comes to Taystee, more is certainly better.
In other OITNB news, Lorraine Toussaint has reportedly been hired for a “heavily recurring” role. Unfortunately, Law & Order‘s Shambala Green won’t be playing an attorney, but a woman named Vee who ran her own drug business and recruited children to work as runners. It seems like they could be setting up some pretty serious drama between Vee and Pornstache, with Red trapped in the middle. Feel free to speculate wildly about OITNB‘s second season with me in the comments.
