Perhaps unaware that American Idol is one of the fastest sinking ships on television, Keith Urban has decided to return to the FOX reality show for a second season, Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly confirmed to reporters at TCA Thursday.
“Keith is going to return to the show,” he said (via THR). “The fans really liked him. Keith is a really funny guy.”
Or maybe it isn’t such a sinking ship after all. The reason: Jennifer Lopez, who is apparently “very close” to returning, as well.
“Both Fox and Jennifer are very happy about this and want it to happen very much,” the source told PEOPLE Thursday.
Lopez joined Idol for seasons 10 and 11, following the high-profile departure of Simon Cowell. (Look how well that turned out for him.) Her popularity with fans and contestants is often credit for keeping the show afloat during such a major transition.
In fact, there were even rumors midway through last season that producers were trying to replace Mariah Carey with Lopez to save the show’s ratings from hemorrhaging. (Those rumors were quickly denied; Carey bailed after the season ended, anyway.)
With Urban confirmed and Lopez likely, that will probably leave just one seat to be filled before the show returns in January; in May, FOX said it is “likely” to return to the show’s original three-judges format right before the departures of Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.
In which case, I nominate Celine Dion.
