Manchester United manager David Moyes is eyeing up Christian Benteke as his new No.9 over concerns he may lose Wayne Rooney in the future, according to the Mirror.
Moyes is a big fan of the Aston Villa striker, who has become something of a revelation since moving to the Premier League from Belgian side Genk last summer.
And he is also aware of the fact he may lose Rooney either in the January window or next summer with the England striker’s contract steadily running down.
League rivals Chelsea, who made two bids for the 27-year-old this summer, are expected to renew their interest in the player when the window reopens in four months.
Meanwhile, Robin van Persie, 30, cannot be expected to go on forever, putting the champions in the market for a new striker.
Moyes made a personal check on Benteke on Friday as Belgium took on Scotland.
Villa would be reluctant to sell, having only just persuaded the 22-year-old to stay at the club by handing him a new 60,000-a-week deal back in July after the forward threatened to quit.
But manager Paul Lambert knows it is inevitable he will field big offers for Benteke throughout the course of the next couple of windows.

Crystal Palace are turning to Aston Villa’s Barry Bannan and Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner in order to bolster their squad for this season’s relegation fight, according to Metro.
The Eagles won their first game of the season on Saturday and are looking to keep the feel-good factor at Selhurst Park by signing the two Premier League stars.
The Scot is reportedly at Selhurst Park having a medical and Bendtner was apparently sighted at Palace’s training ground earlier this afternoon.
With Bannan frozen out at Villa Park and Bendtner unwanted at Arsenal, Palace boss Ian Holloway is hoping to lure the pair with promises of first-team football.
Bannan hasn’t played since March and with Arsenal keen to see the back of the Danish striker – they’re reportedly paying 3 million to encourage his departure – Palace look to soon add their 14th and 15th signings of the window.
Yet Holloway still may not be done – the Bristolian is hoping to sign Spurs under-21 starlet Tom Carroll on loan, and is rumoured to be in for William Gallas, Carlton Cole and Adrian Mariappa before the window shuts at 11pm tonight.
The Londoners also moved for Liam Bridcutt and Leonandro Ulloa from rivals Brighton, but any potential moves have been slapped down by the Seagulls.
Palace have made moves for Brighton duo Liam Bridcutt and Leonandro Ulloa but they have been rejected by the Seagulls.

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is undergoing a medical at Fulham ahead of his proposed 5 million move to Craven Cottage, according to Sky Sports sources.
The 29-year-old was reportedly the subject of a 4 million bid from the Cottagers last month, which was rejected by Villa, leading to Fulham’s improved offer.
Bent was a peripheral figure at Villa Park last summer, playing second fiddle to new signing Christian Benteke and making just the 16 Premier League appearances under manager Paul Lambert.
And with Benteke committing himself to the Midlands club having earlier handed in a transfer request, it appears as though Villa are finally prepared to offload a player they paid Sunderland 24 million for back in 2011.
Bent was signed under the Gerard Houllier era and has been something of a flop since, scoring just 25 times in 64 appearances.
And the fact that Villa are taking a 19 million hit on the player only serves to exemplify how badly the signing went wrong.
Bent, who was also wanted by Newcastle United, would be a welcome addition at Fulham however, who are looking for a new forward to ease some of the burden on the club’s top goalscorer last season, Dimitar Berbatov.

Aston Villa’s poor run has stemmed from the dip in form of their front trio Gabriel Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann, and Christian Benteke. They will be without Agbonlahor and Weimann for the Cardiff clash, which means a new look attacking pairing again for Lambert’s men. Left-back continues to be a problem area for the Midlands side, with Antonion Luna and Joe Bennett both ruled out with injury – leaving Lambert to stick with a makeshift left-side with Leandro Bacuna set to deputise.
Cardiff City are playing with confidence, but have had unwanted distractions from the club’s owner Vincent Tan. Nevertheless, they will still be on cloud nine following the Swansea victory and will regard this weekend’s match as winnable considering Aston Villa poor home form – with just one win at Villa Park this season.
Aston Villa are enduring an injury crisis of late. Antonio Luna, Jores Okore are out of action, and the side could also be without Andreas Weimann, Gabby Agbonlahor, Fabian Delph, and Joe Bennett.
Cardiff have just Andres Cornelius as the only absentee from the first-team.
Villa have been suffering from a goal drought of late – with the side failing to score in their last four league outings. With just one win from their previous five games means the Villans regard this fixture as a must-win.
Cardiff have been in decent form, recently beating Swansea City 1-0 in the first ever South Wales derby in the Premier League. The Bluebirds have won just once on their travels so far this campaign, but are sitting pretty in 12th place – three places and two points above Villa.

For West Ham United; Matt Taylor, Alou Diarra, James Collins, Andy Carroll, Ricardo Vaz Te and Stephen Henderson are all confirmed absentees. Mladen Petric and James Tomkins are doubtful for the clash, so manager Sam Allardyce is hardly spoilt for choice with his squad.
The Villans are short of options at left-back, with Antonio Luna and Joe Bennett both ruled out of action, meaning centre-back Nathan Baker could deputise in their absence. Forward Gabriel Agbonlahor is also doubtful, meaning Lambert will most likely give the out-of-form Andi Weimann a start.
The home side find themselves in poor form of late, with just one win in their last eight games. The Hammers are in 15th place with 9 points from 9 games and are likely to once again be without a recognised striker. West Ham’s home form has been below par this campaign – with three defeats from four outings at Upton Park.
Aston Villa’s recent form has also been lacking. The Midlands outfit have failed to score in their last three league games, with their most recent PL victory coming at the end of September. However, Villa boast a good run of form on their travels – with the side having taken 7 points from a possible 12.
- West Ham (4-2-3-1): Jaaskelainen, Rat, Reid, Tomkins, Demel, Nolan, Noble, Jarvis, Morrison, Downing, Diame
- Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, El-Ahmadi, Delph, Bacuna, Tonev, Weimann, Benteke
