How The Grinch Stole Christmas Gets Animated Remake

how the grinch stole christmas

Just over twelve years since Jim Carrey starred in Ron Howard’s miserable live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ sacred children’s tale, Hollywood is planning to try again with a CG-animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Deadline reports that Illumination Entertainment are teaming with Universal Pictures to produce a new version of the popular classic, more-in line with recent Seuss adaptations The Lorax and Horton Hears A Who (both also produced by Illumination Entertainment).

Though not a financial failure ($345 million worldwide), the live-action version at the turn of the millennium wasn’t a critical success and Seuss’ tale would likely have stayed buried if The Lorax hadn’t made $348 million itself last year on the global market having only cost $70 million to make. A no brainer then that they are quick to make plans for another take on “the mean one” to be introduce to a new generation of kids.

Pete Candeland, an animation director responsible for several of Gorillaz’s best music videos, will direct, though no writer or release date is yet attached, though for the latter it’ll be this Christmas or next.

Check out Candeland’s music video for “Stylo” below for a sense of his style and the trailers for the two Grinch movies to date, the 2000 live-action big-budgeted misfire, and Chuck Jones’ fondly remembered 60′s animated classic;
