Liverpool are bracing themselves for a 45 million transfer deadline day bid from Real Madrid for striker Luis Suarez, according to the Metro.
The Reds have battled tooth and nail to retain the services of the Uruguayan, who has been linked with a move away from Anfield all summer.
They have already rejected two bids – one of 30 million and a second worth 40 million and 1 – from Premier League rivals Arsenal, but may have to fend off interest in their prized asset a third time as Real prepare their late offer.
The Spanish giants have just broken the world transfer record by landing Gareth Bale from Tottenham for 86 million, but their spending spree may not end there, with just a little under eight hours of the transfer window left to run.
Suarez scored 33 goals for club and country last season and was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year Award, while his good form earned him a series of admirers from some of the continent’s leading clubs.
As well as Real and Arsenal, European Champions Bayern Munich have shown an interest in the striker in the past, and Liverpool remain under heavy pressure to sell despite their official stance that the player is not for sale.
Suarez has in the past made no secret of his ambition to play for a Champions League club and recently admitted that he dreams of playing for Madrid.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Luis Suarez has taken another twist after the Liverpool striker denied making comments saying he could stay at Anfield this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
Yesterday, the 27-year-old was quoted by a Uruguayan newspaper saying he could stay at the Merseyside club for the “affection of the people”.
But it seems as though Suarez has now performed an amazing U-Turn, saying after Uruguay’s 4-2 win over Japan yesterday:
“I didn’t say that. Maybe someone else did and the main thing is that I am here now with the national team.”
Suarez’s original (alleged) comments to Uruguayan newspaper El Observador were:
“For now, due to all of the people’s affection (for me), I will be staying.”
Uruguayan journalist Martin Chaquero also claimed he had been told Liverpool would keep the club’s top goalscorer last season.
Chaquero even claimed Suarez could sign a new contract at Anfield.
“Luis Suarez confirms to me he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans has influenced his decision.
“Suarez see it as likely that he’ll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool.”
However, a contract extension appears unlikely at best considering the way the striker has behaved in recent times, with his efforts to force through a move to Arsenal leading to manager Brendan Rodgers barring him from training with the first team.
Suarez has been the subject of two failed bids from Arsenal, the most recent being an offer of 1 over 40 million, which was instantly rejected by the Reds, who maintain that the player is not for sale.
And Rodgers has since refused to answer questions on the ongoing transfer saga and will not be making any more public comments on the issue.

Arsenal have been told they aren’t “anywhere near” matching Liverpool’s valuation of striker Luis Suarez, according to the BBC.
Liverpool have rejected two bids from Arsenal for the Uruguayan, including a Gunner’s club-record 40 million plus 1 offer, but Suarez wants to talk with the North Londoners.
Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo:
“If Arsenal want the player they have to produce the value for the player.
“There was an offer a few weeks ago of 35m and two weeks later it is now 40m and 1. I don’t think it is anywhere near the value of what he is worth.
“It is two-fold really. A player may want to go, but then somebody has to pay the value or worth of that player.”
Suarez made his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt yesterday since the infamous Branislav Ivanovic biting incident, coming off the bench during the club’s 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at the MCG.
The 26-year-old had an almost instant impact, setting up new signing Iago Aspas for the winner.
After the game, Rodgers declared there was no new news to report on Suarez’s future but wanted to remind the player of the “debt” he feels he owes the Liverpool fans, who have stood by him for two highly-controversial seasons.
“The support he has received from the supporters and the people of the city of Liverpool has been unrivalled.
“In this period of time he’s missed a lot of games for the club through various reasons. The people have stood by him like a son and really looked after him. Whatever happens in the coming weeks that will be in his mind because it’s something you can never forget.”
While Liverpool remain fiercely determined to keep hold of Suarez, their resolve could be significantly put to the test should Arsenal continue increasing their offers.
Should the Gunners persist and have a bid accepted, it would more than double their previous highest outlay on a transfer.
The Gunner’s club-record-transfer fee remains the 17.5 million they paid Sevilla for Jose Antonio Reyes in 2004.
Suarez wants to leave Anfield to play for a Champions League club despite only signing a new long term deal on Merseyside last year.
