Manchester United’s pursuit of Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas has been well documented recently, and the Old Trafford club haven’t yet given up hope of landing the Spain international.
However reports have emerged today from The Mirror that new Manchester United manager David Moyes will turn his attention to Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, if they have their third improved bid for the former Arsenal midfielder rejected.
The 29-year old German international has been a crucial part of the Bayern team for about a decade, yet Pep Guardiola who replaced Jupp Heynckes in the summer as their new coach does not see where he will fit into his plans according to sources close to the club.
New Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino says he is confident Fabregas will remain at the Nou Camp, dealing another blow to United’s hopes of landing the 26-year old, while his club teammate Javier Mascherano told Sky Sports News this week that he feels he is willing to stay put at the Catalan side.
He said: “I see him here training and he is happy. He grew up in Barcelona and feels the call of the shirt.”
With just two weeks to the beginning of the 2013/14 Barclays Premier League season – and only a week to the annual curtain raiser in the Community Shield where Manchester United face Wigan – Moyes’ patience may be running out as he attempts to make additions to his squad.
Rumours have continued to persist about possible alternatives if Fabregas was to stay at Barcelona, with some reports suggesting that United will consider making an offer for a player they have long admired in Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.
Unsurprisingly, Moyes has also been linked with Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, although it would require a bid of around 22 million to trigger his release clause, leading to speculation that he will look to other targets and Schweinsteiger could fit the bill as Manchester United look for their first major signing of the summer.
While United missed out on the signing of Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga, German Cup and Uefa Champions League holders have also added Mario Gotze from rivals Borussia Dortmund, which could pave the way for the exit of the current German Player of the Year.
As reports in the media suggest Wayne Rooney is now prepared to hand in a written transfer request, the Premier League champions may look to bring in reinforcements.
Barcelona continue to reiterate their stance that Fabregas is not for sale, which could see them turn to other targets with Schweinsteiger reportedly now top of their wishlist.

The FA Cup rears its exciting and often unpredictable head again this weekend as the teams still involved prepare for their fifth round ties. As unpredictable as the prestigious competition can be however, the vast majority of bookmakers make Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side favorites to lift the trophy in May.
United face Reading at Old Trafford on Monday evening in what should be a fairly straight forward passage to Round Six based on form and with Manchester City and Chelsea the only really credible competition for the team who sit twelve points clear at the top of the Premier League, I present to you five reasons why Manchester United will once again win the oldest club competition in the world.
5. They Are Hungry To Win It Again
It is astonishing to think that it has been nearly nine years since Manchester United last won the FA cup when they beat Millwall 3-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Since then they have been runners up twice, to Arsenal in 2005 and Chelsea in 2007 and they still remain the most successful team in the competition’s history with 11 wins.
Knowing how competitive Sir Alex is and how success is woven into the fabric of Manchester United he will be itching to win it for a 12th time and he will be making it perfectly clear that he would love an FA Cup to go with what should be a straightforward 20th Premier League title.
There is also the fact that a few high profile players within the United squad have never won the FA Cup, most notably Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, so for those players it will be of paramount importance to win such a well loved and respected cup competition.
