Perhaps unaware that American Idol is one of the fastest sinking ships on television, Keith Urban has decided to return to the FOX reality show for a second season, Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly confirmed to reporters at TCA Thursday.
“Keith is going to return to the show,” he said (via THR). “The fans really liked him. Keith is a really funny guy.”
Or maybe it isn’t such a sinking ship after all. The reason: Jennifer Lopez, who is apparently “very close” to returning, as well.
“Both Fox and Jennifer are very happy about this and want it to happen very much,” the source told PEOPLE Thursday.
Lopez joined Idol for seasons 10 and 11, following the high-profile departure of Simon Cowell. (Look how well that turned out for him.) Her popularity with fans and contestants is often credit for keeping the show afloat during such a major transition.
In fact, there were even rumors midway through last season that producers were trying to replace Mariah Carey with Lopez to save the show’s ratings from hemorrhaging. (Those rumors were quickly denied; Carey bailed after the season ended, anyway.)
With Urban confirmed and Lopez likely, that will probably leave just one seat to be filled before the show returns in January; in May, FOX said it is “likely” to return to the show’s original three-judges format right before the departures of Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.
In which case, I nominate Celine Dion.

In news that could either be really good or bad for Harry Connick Jr., The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the crooner will join the judges table for the 13th season of American Idol.
Up until last week, reports had pegged mega-producer Dr. Luke for the position next to Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban. That deal was impossible to lock down though, because Luke has an exclusive deal with Sony Music and A.I. deals exclusively with Sony’s rival, Universal Music Group.
Connick Jr. seems to be a natural fit for the floundering reality competition, as he’s appeared as a mentor several times already. Whether or not that translates into being a good judge and higher ratings, that remains to be seen.
And although Fox has yet to make the announcement official, host Ryan Seacrest seems ready to announce something.
Got some @AmericanIdol news for you coming very soon…

We may have been MORE than a little bewildered with the line-up this year for VH1‘s Divas Live concert, which will feature the likes of Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, and Jordin Sparks paying tribute to the dearly departed Donna Summer and Whitney Houston, but that’s apparently because the network has apparently decided only one TRUE diva has to take the stage this year!
And that would be the show’s host, Adam Lambert!

“American Idol” producer NIGEL LYTHGOE confirmed the widely-reported feud between MARIAH CAREY and NICKI MINAJ, saying that it is definitely not a plot to influence ratings because the timing for that is just “wrong.”
Well that’s… logical.
You’ve heard about the rumored feud between new “American Idol” judges, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj… Despite them denying that they were at odds with each other, their recent curse-filled spat during unaired auditions of the upcoming season proved that there was indeed some serious heat between the two divas.
Now the show’s own producer, Nigel Lythgoe-also known as THE person who could be orchestrating the whole thing-has denied such rumors, saying that it’s not fake.
He told TMZ:
“I have no idea why I would be doing it [for ratings] five months before the show went out.”
Not one to lie about the need for such promo strategy, he admitted:
“I would only do anything for ratings a month before the show went out. They’ve got my timing wrong.”
So if that wasn’t it, it looks like we can be expecting a crazy publicity stunt for the show around December.
Do you believe Nigel?
