Cory Monteith Found Dead in Vancouver Hotel

Glee‘s Cory Monteith has passed away.

The 31-year-old actor was found dead in his room on the 21st floor at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver, Canada. He had checked into the hotel on July 6 and was due to check out on July 13, according to Vancouver Police.

Monteith’s reps sent Celebuzz the following statement:

Monteith, who played the adorable quarterback Finn Hudson, spent time in rehab early this year, checking into a substance addiction treatment facility in April. After a short month, Monteith left rehab in May and laid low with co-star and girlfriend Lea Michele during a holiday Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Monteith had a long history of drug addition. At 16 he battled drugs and alcohol, but credited turning his life around due to an intervention three years later at 19.

Monteith’s publicist Melissa Kates also confirmed the sad news, to USA TODAY. “We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss.”

An official cause of death is yet to be determined, but police say there were no immediate indications of foul play. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Update 2:50am ET – Statement released from Glee producers, 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Broadcasting: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. He may be gone but Cory Monteith is still living on in his work.

A new promotional still from the late Glee star’s final film McCanick was released this week following news the crime drama will be making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Chris Colfer On Cory Monteith’s Death: It’s ‘Unnerving’ For Fans To Tell Us How To Mourn

Many fans may have taken to Twitter and Facebook to mourn the death of Glee star Cory Monteith, but his co-star Chris Colfer prefers to pay tribute to the actor privately.

“It’s difficult because it’s hard to mourn someone, but it’s another thing to mourn someone with the world,” he said in an interview with HuffPo Live. “I think a line needs to be drawn, because it’s really unnerving to get messages from people, from 12-year-olds in Nebraska telling you how to mourn and telling you how to pay your respects.”

“I think it’s really important for people to know that life goes on and be there for each other,” he continued. “I don’t know if there’s anything else you can do.”

And life has continued.

Aside from the cast returning to returning to work to film the fifth season of Glee, Monteith’s girlfriend and co-star, Lea Michele, has broken her silence since the actor’s tragic passing. She recently tweeted:

Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart. pic.twitter.com/XVlZnh9vOc

Cory Monteith: An ‘Enduring Sweetness’ on Glee

Cory Monteith arrived in our homes in 2009 in a happy burst of music, color and youth called Glee.

The news of his death in a Vancouver hotel room comes with the shock of someone dying at only age 31 (he seemed more like 22) – and also with the realization that he takes with him that music, color and youth.

Monteith was Finn Hudson, tall, handsome in a clean, square way. He looked like an old-fashioned teenage dreamboat dropped down in a school so up-to-the-minute in its heterogeneous mix he might have seemed out of place – like Ronald Reagan turning up in his brown suit to audition for the annual musical (Rent, say).

But Monteith had an open-faced quality that revealed, or betrayed, whatever emotion he was feeling (or singing) at the moment. He had an earnestness, an awkwardness, a sincerity that gave him a certain rawness – and an enduring sweetness.

The other performers on Glee tend to have the shiny, expert confidence that we want (and need) of a show that expects its characters to burst into song. Monteith never had quite that same edge: His definition was softer. He moved through the corridors of McKinley High at a slightly different lope, and that all lingers in the mind.

At least that’s how Monteith strikes me now – perhaps I’d already begun to adjust my ideas about him after he entered rehab earlier this year for substance abuse. These shadows filter into your perceptions, especially your perceptions of an actor still so early in his career – and associated with a show as bright as Glee.

Miss him already.

Cory Monteith Was ‘In Great Spirits’ Two Days Before Death

Two days before he was found dead, Cory Monteith enjoyed “a quiet night with a lot of laughing” with one of his first mentors, Maureen Webb.

“He looked so good, so healthy,” Webb, the co-founder of Project Limelight Society, a Vancouver charity close to the actor’s heart, tells PEOPLE. “I hadn’t seen him look that good in a long time.”

Joined by Monteith’s manager Elena Kirschner, the trio dined at East of Main, a restaurant that supports the organization. “We ate a lot of food,” recalls Webb, noting no one drank alcohol. “We drank the rhubarb lemonade.”

Monteith initiated the dinner, telling Webb he wanted to get more involved the non-profit arts program for children that he had supported since its 2011 launch.

“I told him, ‘I remember everything we talked about when we first talked about this project. Now it’s happening.’ His face just lit up. He was in great spirits.”

Two days later, on Saturday, the 31-year-old Glee star’s body was discovered in his hotel room. No cause of death has been determined but police have ruled out foul play.

LEA MICHELE “Has Been Grieving” With CORY MONTEITH’s Family

LEA MICHELE “has been grieving” with boyfriend CORY MONTEITH‘s family following the actor’s tragic passing, according to the latest Hollywood news.

DGG 038030

While a lot of celebrities and “Glee” co-stars have expressed their grief and sorrow on Twitter over Cory‘s tragic and untimely death, his girlfriend Lea Michele has yet to make a public statement-although her rep did release one immediately after news broke of his death, asking the media to respect the actress’ privacy at this difficult time.

Following the results of Cory‘s autopsy, which revealed that the cause of his death was a “mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol,” Lea‘s rep issued another statement (furnished to PEOPLE):

Lea is deeply grateful for all the love and support she’s received from family, friends, and fans. Since Cory‘s passing, Lea has been grieving alongside his family and making appropriate arrangements with them… They are supporting each other as they endure this profound loss together. We continue to ask the media to respect the privacy of Lea and Cory‘s family.”

Lea famously encouraged and stood by Cory in April as he went through yet another stint in rehab for substance abuse, which he completed later that month.

The couple had been dating for over a year.
