Last night, everyone in Hollywood got real glammed up to celebrate the very best of television (and Netflix). You can see the full winners list here, but these are the 10 things you really missed last night.
Merritt Wever’s Acceptance Speech
Merritt Wever was the first in a night full of upset Emmy wins. Her shockingly short acceptance speech – “Thank you so very much. Um, I gotta go, bye.” – was an excitingly candid moment from someone who was clearly not expecting to win.
Carrie Underwood’s Beatles Tribute?
In a night full of of tributes, Don Cheadle and Carrie Underwood staged a tonally confusing tribute to television’s role in reporting John F. Kennedy’s death and also the Beatles?
Okay, sure, it was definitely staged. But this guy won the Emmys telecast.
Will Ferrell and Sons
Joking that Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith had dropped out at the last minute, Will Ferrell presented the awards for best comedy and drama series with his children on stage, saying he couldn’t find a babysitter in time.
Stephen Colbert Finally Got His Emmy
Stephen Colbert and Co. ended The Daily Show‘s decade-long winning streak, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series. Colbert thanked Jon Stewart in his acceptance speech, but also went on to say: “They say it’s an honor just to be nominated, but it’s also a lie. Winning is way better.” Congratulations, Stephen.
Kevin Spacey Has No Time for Cameras
He may not have won for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, but Kevin Spacey stole the show with his reaction to the reaction camera.
Elton John’s Jacket
For a tribute to Liberace, Elton John donned one of his Captain Fantastic-era jackets and sang “Home Again,” a song he said reminded him of Liberace. It was Elton John’s first time performing at the Emmys.
Diahann Carroll and Kerry Washington
Diahann Carroll, the first-ever African-American Emmy nominee, and Kerry Washington shared the stage to present the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. While Washington may have looked a bit uncomfortable as Carroll heaped praise on her, it was a truly historical moment between two trailblazers. Though Washington didn’t win, she was the first black woman nominated as a lead actress since 1995.
Gary Holds Selina’s Bag
As Julia Louis-Dreyfus accepted her fourth Emmy, she was joined on stage by Tony Hale, who plays her Veep character’s ever-faithful personal aide, Gary. Hale also won an Emmy for his performance on Veep last night.
Edie Falco’s Tribute to James Gandolfini
Having played his wife for six seasons of The Sopranos, Edie Falco delivered an emotional tribute to James Gandolfini, saying: “You all knew James Gandolfini the actor. I was lucky enough to know Jim the man. For 10 years as his close colleague and his pretend life-partner, and for many more years as his friend. And it’s Jim, the man, the very dear man, that I will miss most of all.”
Unlike the Golden Globes, the Emmys like to retain a sense of dignity when handing out awards. Once that ends, though, all bets are off.
After the ceremony, held downtown at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, stars dispersed to several different parties. Mick Jagger and Laura Dern attended HBO’s after party at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, while Sofia Vergara got Latina Girl Wasted at Fox’s bash downtown.
Let’s see what we missed in the photo gallery, shall we?
Grey’s Anatomy used to be a big deal at the Emmys; they don’t get invited anymore. So Ellen Pompeo was watching from home when she noticed the show’s lack of diversity.
“I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all,” Pompeo told USA Today. “The Emmys felt so dated to me. … That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”
The Emmys were, and have always been, incredibly white. This year, Kerry Washington‘s nomination for Scandal, another Shonda Rhimes show, was the first for a black leading actress since 1995; a fact the Emmys was not ashamed of, but rather celebrated.
Pompeo went on to say: “I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast which represents the world that I walk around in every day.”
Later, on Watch What Happens Live, Pompeo clarified that she thought she’d been off the record when she made those remarks, but that she stood by them.
Being a famous actor is great for a number of reasons. Huge paychecks and airbrushing are probably the top two reasons, but FREE SWAG is a close third.
While we cannot cut you a large check or airbrush your photos (not that they need it!), we can make good on The Number Three Reason It’s So Great Being a Famous Actor and provide you with the same FREE SWAG given to people like Neil Patrick Harris, Bryan Cranston, Kerry Washington, and Sofia Vergara. That’s right, we’re awarding one lucky reader the Giving Suite Collection, which will be given to stars attending the 65th Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 22.
