It could be a case of be careful what you wish for, for up and coming prospect Gerorge Groves this winter. It has been confirmed that a mouth watering fight for all British boxing fans will take place late this year, with a date still to be agreed for a late November, early December clash between IBF and WBA Super-Middleweight Champion Carl Froch and the mandatory challenger for the IBF strap, George Groves.
Groves has gotten his chance to prove that he is indeed the prospect that he has claimed to be ever since defeating Olympic gold medalist James DeGale in 2011. Since that victory, injuries have curtailed the Londoner’s progress for the best part of a year, but over the past 10 months or so he has gotten back on track and has thrown his name right back in to the mix for world titles by being very active in 2013 so far.
In the Froch camp, ever since his comprehensive defeat to one of the Pound for Pound greatest fighters, Andre Ward, Carl Froch has gone from strength to strength. In possibly the performance of his career, the Nottingham fighter pounded the undefeated and bookies favourite, Lucien Bute for five rounds, winning by KO in a blistering performance.
Froch then went on to avenge one of his two defeats by dispatching his friend Mikkel Kessler this past May, in a pulsating encounter where Froch won on points fairly comprehensively.
In the build up to the Kessler fight, it was clear for all to see that Groves had been getting under Froch’s skin; with the 36 year-old Froch labelling Groves as a traitor for sparring (alongside fellow Brit Nathan Cleverley) with his up-coming opponent, Kessler, in Denmark. Speaking ahead of Froch-Kessler 2, Froch told the media, “I certainly wouldn’t help a foreign fighter prepare for a British fighter and I’ve not spoken to anybody who would.”
“But Groves has got a chip on his shoulder anyway. He won’t spar with me because he considers himself a potential opponent, though he is the only one that does. Nobody is going to take him seriously until he has had a couple of fights with decent people and stops getting knocked out in sparring, which seems to be happening quite regularly.”
Groves brushed off the incident as a bit of a storm in a tea-cup, telling Sky Sports, “Carl was the main instigator in that, traitor’s a tough word to use – so he’s the King is he and I’m traitorous against his throne?
“It’s priceless sparring that I couldn’t possibly turn down. There’s lots of needle going around, but Carl knows the last time we sparred was before the first Kessler fight and it didn’t do him any favours, so maybe I’ve gone out there and softened Mikkel up for him so maybe he should be thanking me.”
So the fight that all the Brits wanted will go ahead this winter, speaking to Sky Sports about the upcoming bout, Froch said, “I’m excited the first defence of both my belts is a big domestic clash.
“I am a proper fighter and a proper champion and I will always face my mandatory challenger rather than vacate the title.
“I’ve known George for a while, I’ve sparred with him and watched him grow and now he’s my mandatory. I will be pouring everything into my preparation for the fight and George will face the very best of me.”
So pick a winner for this one folks; will it be the battle hardened warrior that is Carl “The Cobra” Froch, or has the 36 year-old Nottingham man past his sell-by date. Tune in to find out. The tickets are certain to sell out fast in what is sure to be a fight of the year contender.
