The highly anticipated royal biopic Diana starring Naomi Watts has come under fire from movie critics in Britain, who have branded the motion picture “fabulously awful,” “tedious” and “cheap.”
The 44 year-old actress takes on the title role of Diana, Princess of Wales in the film, which premiered in the on Thursday night and portrays the late royal in the last years of her life before her death in a car crash in Paris, France in 1997.
Nonetheless, the movie has received a slew of scathing reviews from Britain’s critics in the aftermath of the premiere, with many questioning the movie’s historical accuracy and even slamming the story as a “soap opera” re-imagining of the princess’ life.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave Diana just one star out of a possible five and heavily criticized the film, writing, “Poor Princess Diana. I hesitate to use the term ‘car crash cinema’. But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death… The movie isn’t so much Mills & Boon as a horrendous Fifty Shades of Grey with the S&M sex taken out – and replaced with paparazzi intrusion and misunderstood charity work… The moment anyone, anyone at all, opens their mouth we are in TV-movie-land, soap-land.”
The Daily Telegraph‘s David Gritten concurs, singling out the movie’s references to the Paris car crash as a “redundant piece of lurid sensationalism,” adding of the film, “What’s the point of Diana? It’s hardly fascinating. It doesn’t offer new facts about the Princess’s life. And it certainly doesn’t explain her complexity or contradictions. That would take a different, better film altogether.”
David Edwards of the Daily Mirror adds, “Diana can only be described as a fabulously awful film. The Queen of Hearts has been recast as a sad-sack singleton that even Bridget Jones would cross the street to avoid… The film’s a cheap and cheerless effort… Director Oliver Hirschbiegel… should know better… Despite a peroxide hair-job, (Watts) looks, sounds and acts nothing like the Princess of Wales. Wesley Snipes in a blonde wig would be more convincing.”
Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail also gave the film just one star out of five, branding it “tedious”, “slow” and “terribly, terribly dull”.
The film has also been criticized by the princess’ former lover Dr. Hasnat Khan, who is played by Lost star Naveen Andrews onscreen.
He insists the story is based on “hypotheses and gossip” and is “completely wrong.”

Alec Baldwin’s model daughter Ireland has unleashed a twitter tirade against the paparazzi after a run-in with a female photographer.

She wrote, “This paparazzi b**ch who was sketchily hiding in a car goes, ‘I’m just trying to support my kids’. You don’t deserve to even have children… I hope all paparazzi sit on an ant hill with an open butthole.”
Baldwin adds, “I’ve met maybe a few paparazzi that have been friendly. The majority of you are d**k bags.”

The youngest Best Actress Oscars nominee Quvenzhane Wallis has replaced Willow Smith as the star of the upcoming musical movie remake of Annie.
The nine-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild star has officially signed on to play the orphan in a big screen revival of the Broadway show.
Wallis was rumored to be the lead contender after Smith’s 12-year-old daughter quit the project last month, and on Sunday, just hours before the big awards show, Columbia Pictures bosses confirmed the news.
Production chief Hannah Minghella says, “With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhane Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star. Legendary record executive Clive Davis has ‘come out’ as bisexual in his new memoir.
The music mogul, who launched the careers of stars including Whitney Houston and Janis Joplin, opens up about his sexual orientation in his latest book The Soundtrack of My Life.
Davis, who has married and divorced twice, writes candidly about his first same-sex encounter with a man he met at the famous New York City club Studio 54 some 30 years ago.
He recalls, “On this night, after imbibing enough alcohol, I was open to responding to his sexual overtures… Was I nervous? Absolutely. Did the heavens open up? No. But it was satisfying.”
The 80-year-old music veteran also reveals he was in a “monogamous relationship” with an unnamed male doctor from 1990 to 2004, and he has been dating another man for the past several years.
He writes, “Bisexuality is misunderstood; the adage is that you’re either straight or gay or lying, but that’s not my experience. To call me anything other than bisexual would be inaccurate.”
Davis has also discussed his bisexuality in an interview on talk show Katie, which is due to air on Tuesday – the same day his autobiography is released.
He tells host Katie Couric, “I’m still attracted to women… You don’t have to be only one thing or another (straight or gay). For me, it’s the person.”

In the latest episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami, Rob Kardashian explained why he “had to” post hateful messages towards Rita Ora a few months ago.
“She cheated on me with nearly 20 dudes while we were together, I wonder how many she will sleep with now that we apart? (sic) But I mean 20?!!!” Rob Kardashian wrote about Rita in December following their break up.
“I posted what I posted to keep myself from taking her back. Every time she messed up, I took her back for over a year now. I just had to do that to make her hate me,” Rob explained on the show.
Khloe Kardashian added, “Rob was never allowed to admit that they were actually an item because she’s in the entertainment industry. She wanted to represent herself as a single girl.”
Kourtney said that the online posts could turn public opinion against him: “She’s the one who’s in the wrong but she’ll probably try to make it like you’re in the wrong for posting it.”
Kim offered her two cents, “There’s just no point [in tweeting]. You loved her for a reason. You aren’t together for a reason now. You just always have to take the high road.”
The derogatory tweets were removed once the media reported on the public spat.
Pregnant Evan Rachel Wood has succeeded in having paparazzi shots featuring the actress holding a sonogram of her unborn child removed from an online publication.
The Wrestler star flew into a fury on Wednesday after discovering a sneaky snapper had used a long lens to take pictures of Wood and her husband, actor Jamie Bell, on the rooftop parking lot of a Los Angeles hospital following an ultrasound appointment.
The photos were initially published on DailyMail.co.uk, prompting an angry Wood to lash out at the unnamed paparazzo for violating the mom-to-be’s privacy.
In a series of Twitter.com posts, Wood seethed, “Which sick f**k paparazzi hid in the parking lot of my hospital after my ultrasound… You took a picture of my ultrasound photo???!!!! I couldn’t be more furious right now. I want to cry. My child isn’t even born yet. That’s my child. It’s not even out of the womb and they are snapping photos of it… I have never been more violated by a photographer.”
She then tweeted a plea to the tabloid editors who purchased the rights to the images, asking them to “please remove the photos because they are private medical records, and it’s an invasion.”
Her personal request was honored by Daily Mail bosses and they subsequently took the article with the offending shots down from their site.
Executives at the picture agency the paparazzo submitted the images to have also removed the photos from their website.
Celebrating her successful battle with the media, Wood later tweeted, “Man, when that mama bear instinct kicks in, she KICKS in.”
