Merritt Wever’s Acceptance Speech
Merritt Wever was the first in a night full of upset Emmy wins. Her shockingly short acceptance speech – “Thank you so very much. Um, I gotta go, bye.” – was an excitingly candid moment from someone who was clearly not expecting to win.
Carrie Underwood’s Beatles Tribute?

Will Ferrell and Sons
Joking that Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith had dropped out at the last minute, Will Ferrell presented the awards for best comedy and drama series with his children on stage, saying he couldn’t find a babysitter in time.
Stephen Colbert Finally Got His Emmy
Stephen Colbert and Co. ended The Daily Show‘s decade-long winning streak, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series. Colbert thanked Jon Stewart in his acceptance speech, but also went on to say: “They say it’s an honor just to be nominated, but it’s also a lie. Winning is way better.” Congratulations, Stephen.
Kevin Spacey Has No Time for Cameras
He may not have won for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, but Kevin Spacey stole the show with his reaction to the reaction camera.
Elton John’s Jacket
For a tribute to Liberace, Elton John donned one of his Captain Fantastic-era jackets and sang “Home Again,” a song he said reminded him of Liberace. It was Elton John’s first time performing at the Emmys.
Diahann Carroll and Kerry Washington
Diahann Carroll, the first-ever African-American Emmy nominee, and Kerry Washington shared the stage to present the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. While Washington may have looked a bit uncomfortable as Carroll heaped praise on her, it was a truly historical moment between two trailblazers. Though Washington didn’t win, she was the first black woman nominated as a lead actress since 1995.
Gary Holds Selina’s Bag
As Julia Louis-Dreyfus accepted her fourth Emmy, she was joined on stage by Tony Hale, who plays her Veep character’s ever-faithful personal aide, Gary. Hale also won an Emmy for his performance on Veep last night.
Edie Falco’s Tribute to James Gandolfini
Having played his wife for six seasons of The Sopranos, Edie Falco delivered an emotional tribute to James Gandolfini, saying: “You all knew James Gandolfini the actor. I was lucky enough to know Jim the man. For 10 years as his close colleague and his pretend life-partner, and for many more years as his friend. And it’s Jim, the man, the very dear man, that I will miss most of all.”
